In reply to Chris. Yep, Port Douglas certainly isn't cheap, but there are some lower cost options. But it's Australia, it's expensive. No way round that unfortunately.

Some hotels are a little expensive. Not for a budget traveler though. Port Douglas is an incredible place and so is Daintree Rainforest, which is about an hour and half travel from Port Douglas. There are some hotels on the cheaper side with great service and stay experience. I had been to the Daintree Eco lodge and Resort. Great place to stay.

It’s a shame I never made it up there. All the more reason to go back to OZ soon. It looks wonderful in Port Douglas.

It’s more like $600 a night Pam and yes we stayed there loads. We love budget travel, but it’s not all we’ve ever done. It’s horses for courses, to see the world over an extended period, budget wins, next year we’re going to mix it up a little and stay shorter times in more expensive places. For instance Burma, we know it will cost us, but to get there it’s worth spending the extra. Maybe in 2016 we’ll make it to Bhutan, it will cost the earth, so that year it’s probably all we will do. Hotels like Sea Temple aren’t about travel, they’re about holiday, it’s a different animal.

I had to chuckle at this post, as I am a budget traveler and most of your posts are about budget traveling and the first hotel you mention is at least $250/night. That is definitely out of my price range (and for some reason I would have assumed it was out of your price range too, but you mention you stayed there many times). 😉
