We always get a shock when we go back Jennifer. For us it was 15 years. It’s usually more that the accommodation has improved so the price reflects that rather than a direct price hike. The owners, understandably, upgrade and improve over the years, so that what once was a simple backpacker hut ( do you remember the tree houses that used to be there?) is now a decent sort of place taking tour groups from China!

Really hoping to talk my husband into going next year (with same friends and all of our kids). Hopefully accommodation by Jep’s bungalows are still cheap!

It was so lovely there Kerry! I expect you’ll see huge changes on the island now, our first time was 16 years ago, last time about 5 now. About time we returned too!

I hope to return there with our 3 boys on our RTW family trip and am pleased that you recommend it for families.

I love the photo of the fire. This place sure has gotten expensive, but you do need to have different standards when on the road with kids. It is funny what I am willing to put up with on my own vs with the family.

Yep, we were here too 20 years ago. Back then there were no ferries and it wasn’t a big tourist island. You had to pay a fishing boat to get you over to the island. I remember renting a little wooden hut with no shower or AC for about $8 a night. I remember hopping off of the fishing boat and walking that dirt road to find a place to stay. I recall seeing loads of “lady men” in formal gowns too. It was an odd and memorable experience for sure.
