Up here we need them, with the stingers. Some people swim all year round in the nets but we tend not to, there are people stung in the nets too often for me to risk the kids. There were plans to build a lagoon pool in Port Douglas, but I think they’ve been shelved for now, although they’ve demolished all the older buildings in the proposed area on Dickson’s inlet where the pool was going to go. It’s quite a nice grassy area now.

All the locals gather round and enjoy a chance to swim and cool off. I love these man-made city/town beaches, just like the one I saw in Brisbane http://flightsandfrustration.com/brisbane-cbd-and-south-bank-in-pictures/.

The beaches north of Cairns like Palm Cove and Port Douglas (like you mention) are lovely.
