a little too biodegradable

I gave these bamboo straws a shot. I wanted a quieter alternative to the stainless steel straws that cling-clang loud in a ceramic cup. After 3 months my more heavily used bamboo straws are darkening and splitting. I will say I drink a lot of hot tea with them. Overall not cost effcient but they're environmental. I loved the look and size variety.

Love these. I am rolling in the smugness of not using plastic straws lol. I thought they might absorb flavors too much but so long as theyre cleaned and air dried I havent had that problem. My teeth and gums love that theyre not getting doused in coffee several times a day. Gifting them to my crunchy friends for xmas this year!

I've been using one of these bamboo straws in my Nalgene water bottle for about a month. I load my water up with crystalline vitamin C, electrolyte powder, Dr. Willard's concentrate and chlorophill. The straw rides around in the bottle all day and I've noticed no splintering or any wear and tear for that matter. There was an odd taste when using the straw, but it is gone. I am interested to know if these have been treated and if so, with what. The website said all organic, not treated with pesticides, etc. I messaged through the website and am awaiting a reply. Will update this review.

Update as promised:
Here is the reply from the company regarding the odd taste that disappeared after a month or so (it’s good news if you’re concerned about chemicals):

“The bamboo straw are not treated with anything. We have a cleaning process of boiling them in a mixture of water and lime juice or vinegar. Then they are rinsed and left out to dry. The taste might be the bamboo taste as wood does has a small taste.
Hence this go away with the time.”

I’m very appreciative of this company.

While some reviewers are reporting splitting after some use, well they are biodegradable! I would hope they will eventually breakdown. That’s kinda the point of keeping plastic out of our environment and instead using something that is biodegradable. There are several straws and I bet that pack of straws will last at least a year or two if not longer.

I have purchased this pack of straws twice, and we love them so much! We use them for smoothies, iced coffee, any drink really. I have not used them in hot beverages but I’m sure they would work well for those as well.
You definitely want to hand wash them, and wash them shortly after using them or at least give them a good rinse with hot water right after use if you wait to wash them with soap until later, I just feel like this extends the life of the straws. We were using disposable plastic straws from Kroger before we got these and we went through several a day so I have saved a lot of money and a lot of plastic by buying these and it’s the best little change you can make for the planet. I love the single straw carrying bag to take out to restaurants or through starbucks drive through.
We’ve had ours for over 6months and the only reason I wanted to order more was because I left them sitting in water in the sink from time to time and they did start to get worn. But, this was only one or two of them. The key is to let them dry out after use.

So worth the investment! Love this company and product!

A little taste but better than stainless or silicone

I've tried both stainless steel and silicone reusable straws and found that after about 3 uses there was no amount of soaking or scrubbing that would get them not to smell funky. The stainless has way too much of a flavor and forget drinking anything citrusy! So so pleased with this bamboo version though! a little bit of a smell/flavor but its natural and not off putting. The large straws are a bit wide in diameter but since it literally depends on the bamboo stalks can't exactly complain. LOVE the little straws for my toddler. Highly reccomend

I live on the Gulf Coast of Florida, and have seen firsthand the effects of straws and other plastic pollution on the ocean and the life it houses. These straws do not have a strange flavor like other alternatives like silicon. They are reusable multiple times, but make sure you dry them thoroughly so they don't mildew. They come in a nice travel bag--I only wish that the bag had a separate compartment for used straws since we take them to the restaurant with us. Highly recommend!

We’ve all seen the sea turtle video by now with the straw up it’s nose. If you haven’t find it on YouTube! Plastic straws are bad, okay? Plus sipping through straws causes wrinkles. But sometimes you just need a straw for certain drinks. These are wonderful! They’re light weight and come in so many sizes! Some fit through the hole of your insulated cups, some are big enough for thick frozen drinks, some are short for shorter glasses and stirring. They’re easy to carry in your purse and share with friends when we tell them “no straws” at restaurants. BYOS
