Travelling the World With Kids. What Do They Think About It?

Were you wondering what the kids think about being uprooted and dragged round the world by their crazy parents? Is this a plan that works for them, too?

I thought I’d interview them and find out. They are two pretty well travelled children already, they’ve been to Europe, Asia, North America, Africa and Australia, let’s see what they think about our plans to travel the world indefinitely. Boo is six, D is eight.

I asked them these questions before we set off. They were maybe 5-6 and 7-8 years old. They’ve now been travelling 6, maybe 7 years and are very happy with their lot.

This is what my little boys said, long ago.

Are you looking forward to travelling the world?

D:  Yes, it’s going to be so fun, I’ll learn so much and visit loads of exciting places.

Boo: Yes, it won’t be so hot and sweaty.

Where do you most want to go and why?

D: I’d like to go somewhere like the Dead Sea and relax on the water, that would be awesome.

Boo: The Himalayas, because it’s snowy, I’ve never seen snow before.

What sort of things do you like doing when you travel?

D: Spending lots of time with my family and looking at interesting sights.

Boo: I want to do mountain climbing.

In your travels so far, which country did you like best?

D: I’d love to go back to the USA because of Disney. That was the best.

Boo: Thailand because it had squid balls.

What is your best travel memory?

D: Seeing that giant golden Buddha when we were in Thailand. ( Ayutthaya)

Boo: Having hot chocolate and pancakes for breakfast.

Would you rather be in school?

D: No, absolutely, no!

Boo: No!

What will you miss about your current home, Australia ?

D: Just my friends.

Boo: My house, my toys and my friends.

What do you miss about your old home, the UK?

D: Grandma and Grandad.

Boo: London, the giant toy shop and it wasn’t hot. ( Hamleys)

What are the most important things that travelling children should have in their backpacks?

D: Clothes, a computer game console and goggles for swimming.

Boo: Clothes, toys ( all sorts of toys), shoes.

I had no idea that Boo disliked being hot so much, tricky for a child living in the tropics. We’d better fly through Malaysia pretty quickly or he won’t be happy. I already knew that food was very important to him, so no surprises there. It sounds like I primed D to answer the way he did, I didn’t, they were his own answers, parental brainwashing maybe.
