It depends how you’re travelling. You realy need to get to Sigiriya very early to beat the crowds these days. I’d stay up there, some fabulous hotels nearby, check out review on the Paradise resort, one of my favourites. Dambulla won’t take you long so long as you can sprint up that hill pretty quick. Dambulla wasn’t free when we went either ( 3 times!) . Admissions in Sri Lanka are generally expensive, it’s a shame.

Dambulla cave temple is not free anymore It cost 1500 LKR for me today.

since mid-2016 entrance to Dambulla cave temple is free – the entrance fee to Sigiriya has gone up : we paid 4350LKR per person to get to the top of the rock.
