This is a simply splendid introduction to the achievements of many of the world's greatest explorers. It is organised in six main sections under the environmental headings polar, ocean, land, desert, sky and New Frontiers. Each chapter within these big sections is devoted to a particular explorer and the pages follow a set pattern. So we have an explanation of the challenge, the dangers, a brief biography of the explorer and a map of their journey. The ` how to' information boxes include how to treat scurvy, how to avoid frostbite and how to deal with a grizzly bear attack. Illustrations are varied and make for lively pages: there are portraits, contemporary paintings and pictures of objects, maps of journeys and some excellent photographs. One of the best of the latter is a stunning picture of explorers standing in a grotto in an iceberg while Scott's ship, Terra Nova, sits in ice. When it comes to the written element there are welcome longer passages as well as shorter bursts of text. It is good to see women explorers represented. For example, Amelia Earhart crossed the dangerous Atlantic Ocean in a single-engined Lockheed Vega 5B aeroplane. And Gertrude Bell explored the Arabian desert around a hundred years ago by camel, covering nearly fifteen hundred miles. She gathered information about the geography and the political situation and surveyed the landscape.
Does the book enlighten us about why people take on dangerous journey and quests? It certainly makes it clear that that there are different motivations. Many, like Captain Scott who had `pole mania', felt the call of an exciting adventure that made great risks seems worth taking, others like Columbus had a practical reasons for their travels - in his case trying to find an alternative route to the Far East by sailing west. Finding wealth was another great spur - Tasman sailed to Australia and New Zealand in search of fertile farming land and gold and silver to mine. Amelia Earhart was passionate about flying and encouraged other women to train as pilots. The `space race' points to the political motives that lead to a country striving to be the first reach somewhere- to land on the moon for example. There is enough on each explorer to tempt young readers to read more about those who interest them most. This book provides a clear and attractive starting point and it deserves a place in the school library or the home bookshelf.

Explore! The Most Dangerous Journeys of All Time
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 31 July 2013
This is a fabulous gift book for children age 7+ and provides a fantastic introduction to the real life adventures of explorers past and present. The book is split into different areas: Polar, Ocean, Land, Desert, Sky and New Frontiers. Within these pages, your child will read about the race to the South Pole, round the world challenges, climbing the highest mountain, crossing the Empty Quarter of southern Arabia, surviving in the African jungle and much more. The photography is great and, among other famous explorers, some of the names mentioned are Scott and Amundsen, Christopher Columbus, Neil Armstrong, Amelia Earhart, Ranulph Fiennes, Marco Polo, Wilfred Thesiger and David Livingstone.
Each section of this book is split into short sub-sections, which are laid out almost like magazine articles. For example, the Desert section has a piece on Wilfred Thesiger. This explains, in a simple manner, the challange he was faced with, a mini biography, a short section on what he achieved and is accompanied by lots of maps and photographs. It is a great book to dip into, would be ideal for reluctant readers and introduces children to many famous names and events, which they may later want to read about in greater detail. Since receiving it, my nine year old son has been quoting facts about the race to the Moon, how to sail the South Seas and delighting in graphic photographs of frostbite... There are little bullet points on the pages, containing the dangers you would have faced had you taken part in any of these great adventures - for example, taking part in the Florida gold rush had the possible dangers of getting lost, being ambushed by Native Americans and running out of food. Overall, this would be a fabulous addition to any child's bookshelf and I am certain it will be helpful with homework or school projects in the future.

Attractively produced guide to explorers old and new...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 25 August 2013
This is an attractive and interesting book that my ten-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son enjoyed. It starts with a list of great explorers which helps the reader place them in historical context. They are also colour coded into the following categories: polar, ocean, land, desert, sky and new frontiers.
The explorers featured in depth are Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen, Christopher Columbus, Vasco da Gama, Ferdinand Magellan, Abel Tasman, James Cook, Marco Polo, Hernando de Soto, Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, David Livingstone, Mark Kingsley, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, Reinhold Messner, Gertrude Bell, Wilfred Thesiger, Amelia Earhart, Yuri Gagarin, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Ranulph Fiennes.
Each section lasts four to six pages and features sections describing The Challenge, Dangers and Background. There are lots of photos, maps and illustrations. The text is clearly written and broken down into bite-sized chunks that are easy to digest. The book finishes with a page called Extreme Earth, which lists some of the natural wonders of our planet, and an index.

What About Livingstone?

Highest, longest, first; these are the types of words that dominated my nonfiction reading when I was a child. I'm glad to see that there are kids out there who still feel the same as I did as `Explore!: The Most Dangerous Journeys of All Time' by Deborah Kespert will attest. This is the type of edutainment that I used to love and it appears that I still do. Enclosed inside a very solid hardback are several famous (and some not so famous) tales of exploration. The detail is not so deep to feel like a history lesson, but is very informative.
As well as telling you historic information, `Explore' is also full of great fun facts that are really the type of thing that captures a child's imagination. You are told about what to avoid should you go on your own adventure, or perhaps what you may meet. The different stories are very varied and span centuries of exploration from land and sea, right into space. There are some lovely full page photos and illustrations that will also capture the eye and the imagination. `Explore' is a nonfiction book for young nonfiction fans, there is little here for fiction lovers, but they can always go and read something else!

Good Topic, Expertly Covered

This hardback book was an instant favourite with my 9 year old girl, it's fantastic. It's about famous explorers from the 1200's (Marco Polo) up until recent times, covered in a non chronological order and illustrated with plenty of photos and drawings. There are 20 explorers covered in all over 95 pages.
Each explorer is examined in a style that is engaging in the extreme, with the start of each page setting the context and providing an ID card for the explorer. As the mum to two girls I was pleased to see that women are not missing from this History, with Amelia Earhart featuring along with the lesser known Gertrude Bell and Mary Kingsley. We particularly enjoyed the way the story of Scott and his trip to the South Pole was explained, everything is really clear with maps, copies of real documents and pictures of the actual food they ate adding to the text. The story of the Moon landings and Edmund Hillary's trip to Everest also make for fascinating reading for young and old.
This book would make an excellent stocking filler for any child who enjoys non-fiction and is one that we regularly dip into to. It's been a great starting point for a school project (famous Victorians) and it's just the kind of book that can get a child excited about reading, hence me recommending it unreservedly.
