Doesn't work with most Android phones (inc LG V30)

The gimbal itself is well made and works well stabilizing. So why only 3/5 stars. It's the software. I feel a little cheated because nowhere on the amazon description does it say it doesn't work with most android phones. So I can report if you want zoom, or a record button or any of the cool time lapse or panorama options, or even to quickly change the joystick response characteristic don't buy this without checking out the compatibility list. For the record it does not work with the LG V30 because it drops the bluetooth connection after 20 seconds.

Great but has design flaws

Pros: This gimbal is great, the battery life is amazing (and you can charge your phone off of it while filming). The shots are smooth and clean.

Cons: Shooting from certain angles will get the gimbal into your shot, so be aware of that.
If you use any lenses, this gimbal won’t incorporate the weight to balance it, so you’ll have to make or buy your own counterweight (I used washers).

9/14/2018 Update: I do not recommend the DJI app for filming. However, I highly recommend purchasing the app FilmicPro (well worth $14). Makes footage stunning.

App issues, but great video stabilization + Update

Pros:
1) it does a great job stabilizing videos
2) lightweight carrying case
3) lightweight device
4) simple functions

Cons:
1) buggy app that crashes the phone and does not always connect to the gimbal
2) for Samsung Galaxy S6, I have an issue with the arm getting in the way of the video, when fully balanced
3) phone battery drainage
4) on iPhone, the app does not save videos to the phone gallery. You need to manually go to the app and download videos to the device. This does not happen with Samsung Galaxy - easy transfer.

Update 7/15/18: Started to have shaky video (email me if you would like a sample). Sending for repairs to DJI... Ugh, 2 months later :(

Update 7/24/18: DJI found nothing wrong with the device and said the phone needs to be balanced. I find it hard to believe given that for the past 2 months I have not made an effort to balance the phone. We shall see how the video changes once I do balance it.

Update 8/5/19: I balanced the phone, seems to be doing ok so far, videos coming out stable.

One limitation that is making me return this unit

I bought this stabilizer to try to shoot better videos. I have a background in audio and video tech and know that I want to increase my quality. So the stabilizer was one of the first things on the list.

I endlessly compared the Osmo Mobile 2 with the Zhiyun Smooth 4 and wanted all the extra features of the Smooth 4. But in the end I chose the OM2 because the ZS4 app doesn't seem to work at all on the android platform.

The OM2 is easy enough to set up, although the instructions could be a little clearer. It took a very long time to charge up the first time though. The manual states that it charges in 2 hours. I left it plugged in for 3 hours and didn't have any charge (one light blinking). I ended up having to charge it overnight in order for it to function at all. But now it works just fine.

Once setup the device works fine. Video was very stable, just what I was looking for. But now the next step, using an external microphone. I'm much more an audio guy doing some video. So let's plug in a USB microphone. NO GO. The OM2 app (dji go) does not allow me to use the USB microphone on my android phone. I tried a couple different usb microphones (yeti pro, and a cheap usb lavalier) and neither were recognized by the app. I then tried the TRRS mic that comes with the phone to see if I could at least wire an analog microphone to the camera. NOPE. The app does not allow this microphone either.

So I'm stuck with the built-in microphone in the phone itself, unless i want to go with an external mic and a field recorder. That's hard for me to do as I use my phone as my field recorder (with a USB mic I might add).

Jumping on the dji forums, there are many people asking the same question. When will the app allow external microphones? So far the only answer is that they will think about it.

Back this goes, as it does not address audio. I'm now considering the Zhiyun Crane 2 and using my "big SLR" canon instead, but it would be nice to have quick and easy portability with a smartphone.

I purchased this device to use on a family trip to some national parks. I spent nearly 2 hours trying to connect my new DJI Osmo II to my IPhone 8. I followed the very limited printed instructions, a youtube video, and the onscreen prompts and it would sometimes connect and then to disconnect to start over. The behavior was erratic and inconsistent with no apparent reliability. I am not sure if I ever got it working, but was so discouraged with the functionality that I gave up and left it home in a box. This is a purchase I wish I had never made. I own a DJI Mavic Pro Drone with controller that is far more sophisticated and have had nothing but a good experience with it.

This one WORKS, it’s not 100% perfect (I’ll get to that) BUT it does work. GREAT.

I use this Gimbal with an iPhoneX

What works great:
-incredible battery life.
-as light as any other gimbal I tried
-very stable with minimal (if any) sudden repositioning, but they all do it.
-good ergonomy and pretty good grip even if the plastic and sweating hands don’t mix

What doesn’t work so well:
-DJI GO....that thing SUCKS. So yeah, buy FILMIC PRO and unleash the beast
- there is STILL an issue with stabilizer competition and you will need to find your workarounds.
-No wrist strap, I mean....come on.
-No trigger...takes some getting used to
-Phone is held by a spring clamp...so it needs to be rebalanced at every insertion.
-does NOT come with a base

Globally, when paired with FILMIC PRO....I say YES

Es un buen estabilizador, al precio de compra (3200 aprox.) es la mejor compra en un estabilizadora, compite con el Zhinyu Smooth pero por el precio prefiero este, compatibilidad total con la app de FilmicPro; yo nunca logre usar la batería para cargar un celular, de hecho me detecto que se estaba cargando pero nunca cargo, sin embargo no es algo que a mi me sea imprescindible. Lo recomiendo ampliamente, quiza el Smooth 4 de zhinyu tenga más opciones, pero comercialmente este es compatible con más accesorios.

Si lo que buscas es un estabilizador sin muchas complicaciones, de buena calidad y compatible con ios y android esta es la opción. No cuenta con muchas funciones como el resto que hay en el mercado, pero sin duda da una excelente estabilización y calidad de grabación. Los videos parecerán tomados con una cámara profesional y las fotos daran el efecto de ser tomadas con una camara y no un celular. Es una excelente opción si cuentas con un telefono de gama alta y una camara decente de almenos 8MP. Debería incluir la base para fijarlo y equilibrarlo. Al principio equilibrarlo es complejo pero una vez que le entiendes y ves algunos videos en Youtube resulta muy facíl, adquirí la funda por separado al igual que un tripie y una correa para sostenerlo. Aqui en amazon venden soportes para microfono e iluminación. Si estas incursionando en el mundo digitial y no quieres invertir en una camara, saca provecho de tu celular de gama alta y compra este gadget sin duda la mejor opción.
