I got my basic SCUBA cert in 1983. I completed everything for Divemaster in 1987 but only sent off paperwork through Rescue Diver. Between 1983 and 1995 I made well over 180 dives. My life took a dramatic change in 1995 and my diving activities were curtailed until recently. When I decided to get back into diving I needed a refresher course. I took a Nitrox class that gave me that refresher course and another certification, but during that training, I realized that a lot of what I had learned back in the day was no longer valid. I purchased this book to bring myself up to date. This book has been a tremendous help in my re-education as a diver. It gets into the history and the how and why of the science behind scuba diving. I believe this is a book that every diver should read. I definitely feel that I am a better diver now for having read the book.

This book is of value to a newly certified diver or someone interested in becoming certified. As an experienced diver I had great expectations in view of the title of the book, the book description, and the credentials of the author, but I must say having finished the book that I learned very little. A good part of the book is spent on the history of our understanding of decompression sickness and on the different theories of DCS.
Beyond that there is a paucity of practical information on top of what most divers already know. Some statements in the book such as, "systems such as Spare Air are adequate (as backup) for most recreational diving applications", are just dangerously wrong. On top of that the Kindle edition at $29.95 is much overpriced compared to other Kindle books of similar genre.

I too have been following Alex's columns in Dive Training magazine, and couldn't wait to get the complete book. All divers, regardless of experience, will benefit from reading this book because of the wealth of updated information Alex provides on all aspects of our sport. It will give you a better understanding into the art and science of diving, and how to explain it to non-divers and new students alike. And perhaps most importantly, it provides the information necessary to safely return from each trip underwater as well as protect our threatened marine environment. Very detailed and referenced, easily understood, and yes, even thought-provoking in several areas. You will learn something new, and it's guaranteed to spark conversations at your dive club meetings and at your pre-dive planning sessions. A must read!

This is a ridiculously detailed book, broken up into very interesting chapters ranging from history, tech, health, etc.
If every diver read it, scuba injuries and fatalities would definitely decrease, and enjoyment would likely rise too.
There is tons to learn about diving, and short of practicing it, reading this book is probably one of the better ways to introduce oneself to the many many facets of scuba that are crucial to great health, safety, knowledge and enjoyment in the amazing sport of scuba.

SCUBA diving has so many facets from a knowledge and safety perspective and what I appreciated about "The Complete Diver" was the layman's approach that Brylske takes in his writing. The most complex information has been made clear and concise for every level of diver. I have read through this book a few times and find it a valuable resource to consult frequently. My only disappointment is that there is no e-version of this book. I would love to have it on my Kindle!!

I have only read a few selected sections so far, but this book is well-written, and very interesting. It's not just for beginner divers. The author has a huge wealth of knowledge. Some of it is so detailed that I decided to skip ahead a few pages at one point because there is just so much I can absorb in one sitting - (in this case, it was the first part of the book where he covers the early history of scuba and the early developments of the physiology of gases in the body; I wanted to get to more current developments.) My impression is that I will probably want to read every page of this book.
