Editorial Reviews
Review
"In elegant prose, stitched with stories from his Vietnamese homeland and years in Paris, Hanh lays out wisdom from the poignant to the practical...The Art of Living offers an exit ramp from the madness of modern-day overdrive, and just might let us grasp the heaven on Earth." - Chicago Tribune
From the Back Cover
In troubled times, there is an urgency to understand ourselves and our world. We have so many questions, and they tug at us night and day, consciously and unconsciously. In this important volume, Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh—one of the most revered spiritual leaders in the world today—reveals an art of living in mindfulness that helps us answer life’s deepest questions and experience the happiness and freedom we desire.
Thich Nhat Hanh presents, for the first time, seven transformative meditations that open up new perspectives on our lives, our relationships, and our interconnectedness with the world around us. Based on the last full talks before his sudden hospitalization, and drawing on intimate examples from his own life, he shows us how these seven meditations can free us to live a happy, peaceful, and active life, and face aging and dying with curiosity and joy and without fear.
Containing the essence of the Buddha’s teachings and Thich Nhat Hanh’s poignant, timeless, and clarifying prose, The Art of Living provides a spiritual dimension to our lives. This is not an effort to escape life or to dwell in a place of bliss outside of this world. Instead, this path will allow us to discover where we come from and where we are going. And most of all, it will generate happiness, understanding, and love so we can live deeply in each moment of our life, right where we are.

He has authored more than 100 books. This one, edited by his monastic students, sums up the essence of the last lectures he gave before his stroke in 2014, and these lectures sum up the essence of his teachings. He offers deep insight on what it means to be alive and what it means to die. True to his Buddhist roots with numbered lists, he offers liberation from the three “wrong views” and three major practices plus four additional practices. This small 200-page book is jam-packed with solid wisdom. You can sense this teacher’s embodiment of his teachings which gives them added power. Whether speaking, walking, doing calligraphy, engaged in social action, or dealing with a stroke, Thich Nhat Hanh has always walked the walk.
Wonderful wonderful wise and witty insights that make me feel connected to the whole wide world. Truly a "must have".
Brilliant, insightful and funny. My new best friend.
NOTE: The author says that Buddha wasn't God; you don't have to be a Buddist to benefit from considering new ideas. This material is unlikely to conflict with your current deeply held religious beliefs unless you have predetermined that anything spiritual that doesn't match your chosen brand is bad/evil/whatever.

Although I’ve read a good few books on Buddhist teachings and mindfulness over the years, this is the first I’ve read by Thich Nhat Hanh. I soon chose not to read it from cover-to-cover in one or two evenings as I’d planned, but read a chapter, or even just a section, on most days over an extended period. I think this approach worked better for me, and enabled me to gain more from it.
The essential messages are simple (They always were!), but I’ve rarely encountered a book that has made me pay such close attention. One of the main reasons for that is ‘The Art of Living’ is very readable. It also, I have to say, succeeded in making me re-think my interpretation of some of the basic concepts behind Buddhist teachings. 'Emptiness' was, and still is, a real challenge!
Uplifting, questioning, and reaffirming, this book had great relevance. No, I didn’t agree with every word, but then this is not about learning by rote, it’s very much a stimulus that’s pertinent to finding where you ‘fit’ as an individual and as a part of a greater whole…and, I guess that’s as blissfully variable as we all are.
