A LARGE crocodile has closed Four Mile Beach this morning.

Tourists were left gobsmacked as a crocodile emerged offshore near the main swimming area at around 10.30am.

Surf lifesaving staff immediately got swimmers out of the water before the reptile, up to four metres in length, continued swimming south.

A throng of people could be seen on their mobile phones following the croc towards Four Mile Park - watching it appear just 20 metres offshore at times around midday.

It eventually swam further out to sea before disappearing from sight.

Less than 10 minutes later, two people could be seen going for a swim before being alerted by a woman to get out of the water.

It's unclear whether it's the same animal wildlife officers are trying to remove after reported sightings on the beach on Thursday and Friday.

Four Mile Beach was set to reopen for swimming at 2pm.
